#006 - Disease Causing Bacteria

Disease causing bacteria has to "hitchhike" from one source to another for it to be transferred. We can pass a cold or flu to another person with a simple handshake. After the handshake you scratch your nose or eyes there by transferring the germs from hand to an opening into your body which can lead to the possibility of getting sick.

In cleaning, especially in areas where body fluids abound such as a restroom, it is important to eliminate the "hitchhiking" of bacteria. This can be done by designating various cleaning tools for certain tasks. A few good rules to follow is to designate a separate sponge or swab to clean around urinals and commodes than the one you use to clean sinks and drinking fountains. A good way to keep track of this is by color coding your cleaning utensils using a set color in areas that have higher bacteria levels such as a urinal or commode, and another color for more general cleaning and disinfecting.

If you can’t color code another way to separate is by making a small cut in the corner of a sponge and designate that for your urinals and commodes and using the uncut one for more general cleaning. The important thing is to kill and remove the bacteria at the source and not allow for it to move via the cleaning tool.

You should treat your wet mops in the same fashion. Use a separate mop to clean restrooms and your general mopping.
